Co-sourcing and Outsourcing

This once trendy term simply means business activities that could be conducted within a company are conducted by vendors or contractors.  In the 1980’s, many banks had large appraisal departments.  The appraisal departments provided nearly all the appraisals needed by the bank.  Today,  it is more cost-effective for banks to hire contractors to provide the appraisals needed by banks.  Therefore, today many banks co-source and outsource for their appraisal needs.  Some banks maintain small in-house appraisal departments to handle a minimal workload and standard  issues, and contract with vendors for appraisal-supporting services, or for heavy workloads and special issues.  These banks are often described as co-sourcing their needs.  Other banks maintain no appraisal production capabilities, and contract with vendors for all appraisal needs.  These banks are often described as outsourcing for their needs.

A company can co-source or outsource for tactical or strategic reasons.  A tactical reason would be that it generally costs less to outsource standard issue appraisals.  An example of a strategic reason would be that few companies maintain appraisal departments with specialties in litigation appraisal.  Another example of strategic reason would be one-off appraisal projects, such as a corporate acquisition or disposition and special tax or SEC reporting requirements.
